The golf and casual dining concept started to come to life in August with a groundbreaking ceremony.
by: Amanda Postma Sarasota-Manatee Editor

Project: PopStroke

Location: Sarasota

Cost: N/A

Size: 10,934-square-feet, two stories

Builder: Stevens Construction

Architect: MHK Architecture and Planning

Project details: A day out on the golf course can be enjoyable. But there’s nothing better than playing putt-putt with your family.

That’s a vision Fort Myers-based Stevens Construction and MHK Architecture and Planning are carrying out through the construction of PopStroke.

The golf and casual dining concept is co-owned and designed by Tiger Woods and his TGR Design team. The course design provides options for various skill levels through an interactive and competitive experience. Additionally, each course is unique to the location.

The latest PopStroke Stevens Construction is responsible for is a two-story, 10,934-square-foot building on the east side of the University Town Center Mall in north Sarasota, outside Lakewood Ranch and just west of Interstate 75. The building will feature an open-air restaurant, as well as covered dining areas and bars. Company officials declined to disclose the project cost.

Once it’s finished, guests will be able to enjoy a covered playground, beer garden and lobby with retail space. The technology-infused golf and entertainment concept is expected to be completed by early 2022.

This is the second PopStroke Stevens Construction has worked in collaboration with the TGR team. Shaun St. Dennis, division manager of the Stevens Construction Sarasota office, says the crew completed a PopStroke in Fort Myers last September. Plans are already underway for the company to build more locations, including ones in Tampa, Orlando and Gainesville.

Cool factor: Families won’t have to worry about any shortage of fun at PopStroke, including for the kids. “The new concept is very family friendly,” says St. Dennis. (PopStroke is named partially for the nickname the golf icon had for his dad, Earl “Pops” Woods.)

But it’s not just the two 18-hole, synthetic-green, putting courses that makes this a cool project for St. Dennis. Or even the variety of craft beer, wine, signature cocktails, ice cream and outdoor games. Those aspects are, of course, cool. Rather, St. Dennis is more excited about the collaboration with TGR team.

Based in Jupiter, PopStroke is a partnership between PopStroke Entertainment Group, TGR and TGR Design. “This is a natural extension of my golf course design philosophy and my TGR Design business,” Woods said in an October 2019 statement that announced the venture. “Our goal has always been to design courses that bring people together and are fun for golfers of all abilities and ages.”

Wemple. Shaun St. Dennis, division manager of the Stevens Construction Sarasota office, stands among the rubble of what will soon be a PopStroke location in Sarasota.

Challenges: No surprise, supply shortages and material delays have been one of the biggest challenges the project is dealing with — much like many others in a variety of fields.

With materials in short supply, St. Dennis says the biggest challenge with the Sarasota PopStroke location has been to reorganize schedules around the affected materials. “We’ve had to come up with alternative ideas with the design team,” he says, “to overcome the supply shortage on materials.”

Stevens Construction President Mark Stevens, at a groundbreaking event held in August, said construction could be complete by Jan. 1, 2022 — noting if it were a perfect world. Stevens expected construction to be done by February or March, realistically, when the company broke ground. St. Dennis says he expects it’ll be done by March, not far off Stevens' projections.
